US President Donald Trump has called the fatal shooting of Minneapolis woman Rene Good “a vicious situation” as he stated that the 37-year-old woman, shot by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent, was at fault as she tried to “run over” the officer.

During an interview with The New York Times on Wednesday, the US president said, “I want to see nobody get shot. I want to see nobody screaming and trying to run over policemen either.”

However, after watching the surveillance video of the incident, Trump reportedly struggled to justify the ICE agent’s response of shooting Renee Good dead and expressed discomfort. As the video concluded, he said “It’s a terrible scene. I think it’s horrible to watch. No, I hate to see it.”

Adding to his response, Trump said, “That was a vicious situation that took place,” wherein he referred to what federal officials have earlier said that it was an effort by deceased Good to run down the ICE agent.

When asked by the reporter whether the agency’s response was excessive, the US president chose to avoid giving a direct answer and instead accused former Democratic President Joe Biden’s immigration policies. Good, who was a US citizen, had spent most of her life in Colorado.

During a press briefing in Minneapolis following the incident, US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said the woman (Good) was “stalking” officers and that the agent who killed her “used his training to save his own life and that of his colleagues.”

Trump’s comments were at odds with one of his senior advisers, border czar Tom Homan, who in an interview to CBS News said that he would not comment on the video of the shooting and instead wait for the investigation to complete. “Let the investigation play out and hold people accountable based on the investigation,” Homan said.

Following the fatal shooting of Good by an ICE agent, Minneapolis is on the edge against the Trump administration’s latest immigration crackdown, with the governor calling for people to stay calm. Schools in the city have cancelled the classes and other activities as a safety measure, AP reported.

Secretary Noem has said that agents are not going anywhere and DHS has deployed over 2,000 officers in the area, which is the largest immigration enforcement operation ever.
