A nonprofit group committed to increasing food safety has filed a petition asking the FDA to reverse its practice of withholding the names of companies whose foods are linked to outbreaks.

STOP Foodborne Illness filed the petition to challenge the Food and Drug Administration’s use of a loophole referred to as “confidential commercial information,” or CCI. Using the loophole, the FDA routinely withholds the names of companies involved in foodborne illness outbreaks that do not involve recalls.
