In a sharp response to a reference to “judicial corruption” in a Class 8 NCERT textbook, the Chief Justice of India termed the move a “calculated and deep-rooted” attack on the judiciary, saying the Supreme Court would not allow anyone to defame or question the institution’s integrity. Taking suo motu cognisance of the issue, the CJI said he had been receiving numerous calls and messages, including from High Court judges, expressing concern.
Senior advocate Kapil Sibal told the court that senior members of the Bar were “very disturbed” by the inclusion of “judicial corruption” in school textbooks. Abhishek Singhvi argued that it appeared as though one institution was being singled out, with no mention of corruption among politicians, ministers or bureaucrats.
Calling it a new flashpoint between the government and the judiciary, the CJI asserted, “Howsoever high it may go, we will take action,” adding that the court would not permit any attack on the judicial institution.
This is a developing story. It will be updated.
