Vadivelu is ready to swap punchlines for pointed arguments. The veteran actor, who has been steadily exploring layered roles in recent years, is set to headline the Tamil legal thriller Pormuzhakkam. In the film, he will portray a public prosecutor navigating the murky corridors of power while fighting for justice in a politically sensitive murder case.

Directed by AB Binil, the project marks the filmmaker’s foray into Tamil cinema after his debut Malayalam feature Pongala, a 2025 gangster drama fronted by Sreenath Bhasi. With Pormuzhakkam, Binil appears to pivot from the underworld to the courtroom, promising a story that blends legal tension with political intrigue.

According to the makers, the narrative centres on a lawyer determined to uphold the rule of law despite pressure from influential forces. Set against a charged political climate, the film is expected to examine the moral and ethical dilemmas that surface when justice collides with power. For Vadivelu, it is yet another departure from the comic persona that once defined his screen presence.

Over the past few years, the actor has consciously taken on roles that highlight his dramatic range. While audiences continue to cherish his impeccable comic timing, projects like this signal his intent to be seen as more than a humourist. Playing a public prosecutor places him at the heart of a high-stakes battle where rhetoric, restraint and resolve take centre stage.

Joining Vadivelu in a key role is Samuthirakani, an actor known for bringing gravitas to socially driven narratives. Though details about his character remain under wraps, his involvement hints at emotionally charged confrontations and ideological friction. The dynamic between the two performers could well form the backbone of the film’s dramatic tension.

Pormuzhakkam is produced by CG Lalu and Dona Thomas under the banner of Money Land Gold Productions. While the rest of the cast and technical crew are yet to be officially announced, the team has confirmed that filming will commence soon. With pre-production reportedly in full swing, the project is shaping up to be a tightly mounted thriller rather than a sprawling courtroom saga.

Vadivelu was last seen in Maareesan, directed by Sudheesh Sankar, where he shared screen space with Fahadh Faasil. That film further cemented his transition into substantial character-driven roles. His choice of scripts in recent times reflects a desire to challenge audience expectations and expand his cinematic identity.

The title Pormuzhakkam, which roughly translates to a call to battle, suggests that the courtroom proceedings may carry the intensity of a battlefield. Legal dramas in Tamil cinema have often balanced fiery monologues with socio-political commentary, and this film seems poised to follow that tradition while bringing its own contemporary edge.

As Tamil cinema continues to experiment with genre hybrids, Pormuzhakkam stands out as a collaboration that pairs a seasoned performer with a relatively new director hungry to make his mark. If executed with precision, the film could offer both gripping drama and a compelling showcase for Vadivelu’s evolving artistry.

For an actor long associated with laughter, stepping into the shoes of a public prosecutor fighting systemic pressure could mark one of the most defining chapters of his career.
