Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday congratulated the Indian cricket team for their emphatic victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, calling it a display of “exceptional skills, determination and teamwork”.
“Champions! Congratulations to the Indian team on winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup! This remarkable triumph reflects exceptional skills, determination and teamwork. They have shown outstanding grit through the tournament. This victory has filled every Indian heart with pride and joy. Well done, Team India!” PM Modi said in a post on X.
The win came at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, where India crushed New Zealand by 96 runs to claim the 2026 T20 World Cup. India became the first team to defend a T20 World Cup title, the first to win the trophy three times, and the first to lift it on home soil.
Batting first, India posted a massive 255/5 in 20 overs, the highest total ever in a T20 World Cup final. Sanju Samson top-scored with 89, while Abhishek Sharma delivered the fastest half-century of the tournament, reaching 50 in just 18 balls.
Ishan Kishan (54 off 25) and Shivam Dube (26 off 8) also made strong contributions.
India’s bowlers then dismantled New Zealand, with Jasprit Bumrah taking four wickets and Axar Patel claiming three, restricting the visitors to 159 in 19 overs.
POLITICIANS SHOWER PRAISE ON TEAM INDIA
President Droupadi Murmu called India’s win a marker of the rich talent pool we have among our youth in diverse fields.
“Heartiest congratulations to Team India which scaled several peaks of history by winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup emphatically. India has the proud distinction of being the only country to win the cup three times. It is also the only team to win the cup twice in a row. This brings immense joy and pride to our cricket loving people. It is also a marker of the rich talent pool we have among our youth in diverse fields. Every single player, entire management and the support staff deserve the highest praise for this collective triumph. I wish our cricket team sustained glory in the future,” she said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also congratulated the Men In Blue for their exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
“What a victory…!! Hats-off to World Champion #TeamIndia. Your exceptional performance throughout the tournament and the vigorous display of mettle has brought glory and pride for the nation. Congratulations to the entire team for making every Indian proud,” Shah posted on X.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi also took to X and praised the Surya Kumar Yadav-led side for a magnificent victory. He also congratulated Sanju Samson and Jaspreet Bumrah for their remarkable performance.
“Champions once again! A magnificent victory for our Men in Blue with a special mention to Sanju Samson and Jaspreet Bumrah for their remarkable performance throughout the tournament. Congratulations to Team India on retaining the trophy at home and giving the nation yet another unforgettable moment to celebrate,” Gandhi wrote.
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge said that 140 crore Indians were immensely proud tonight.
“Many congratulations to Team India on a magnificent victory over New Zealand in the #T20WorldCup Final. 140 crore Indians are immensely proud tonight. Captain Suryakumar Yadav led with authority and belief. Sanju Samson rose as the saviour of the final, while Ishan Kishan delivered as the unsung hero. Brilliant contributions from Hardik Pandya, Tilak Varma, Shivam Dube, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Abhishek Sharma and Jasprit Bumrah powered this historic triumph,” Kharge said.
