A man allegedly chased his estranged wife at a bus stand and hacked her to death in broad daylight in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district on Sunday before walking into a nearby police station and surrendering, police said.
The accused, identified as Sudhakar from Palamadai, was married to Pechiyammal and the couple have two children. According to preliminary information, the couple had been living separately due to differences of opinion.
Police said the incident took place when Pechiyammal was on her way to work. Sudhakar allegedly followed her and waited for an opportunity to confront her.
When Pechiyammal got down at Sandipu bus stand, Sudhakar allegedly pulled out a sickle and began chasing her in public view. He then attacked her repeatedly, killing her on the spot.
Investigators suspect that Sudhakar carried out the attack because he believed his wife was involved in an illicit relationship.
Police reached the spot soon after the incident and recovered Pechiyammal’s body. The body has been sent for autopsy as part of the investigation.
Meanwhile, Sudhakar surrendered at Sandipu police station following the attack. Police have taken him into custody and a detailed probe into the incident is under way.
Further details are awaited as investigators continue to question the accused and gather evidence related to the case.
