A 10-year-old schoolgirl allegedly died by suicide after being reprimanded by a teacher over her untidy clothes in Uttar Pradesh’s Kannauj. The incident caused the child’s family members and locals to lay siege to the school with the body, police said.
A resident of Rampur, the girl was a student of fifth standard. Her younger sister studies in Class 3 at the same school. On Saturday, the sisters had arrived at school as usual.
According to available information, during uniform inspection in the morning assembly, the duo were scolded by a woman teacher over their personal hygiene and untidy uniforms.
The girls later reached home while sobbing uncontrollably and narrated the incident to their mother. Shortly afterwards, the elder sister allegedly hanged herself inside the house.
The tragic occurrence triggered a wave of anger amongst the locals, who protested outside the school in large numbers with the girl’s body.
Subsequently, the local Block Education Officer and the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) reached the spot to pacify the crowd.
A case has been registered by the police against the lady teacher allegedly involved in the incident, the principal of the school, and two others on the basis of a complaint lodged by the child’s mother, officials said.
