Nitish Kumar is one of the well-known figures in Indian politics. He has been serving as the Chief Minister of Bihar since 2015 and previously held office from 2005 to 2014, and briefly in 2000. He is well respected not just in State politics but also among the national political community. The national president of the Janta Dal is Bihar’s longest-serving chief minister. However, now he is set to enter a new chapter of his political career at the age of 75. Amid that, let’s take a look at his son, Nishant Kumar and his journey in the political world.
Nishant Kumar is the son of the soon-to-be former Chief Minister of Bihar, Nitish Kumar. According to reports, after initially showing no interest in politics, he is now set to enter the field, which could mark a turning point for the ruling Janta Dal (United). Reports have claimed that Nitish Kumar has given his nod to his son’s political debut. What makes his entry in the political world even more important is the timing of his debut, as it comes at a time when discussions around succession and leadership transition have grown louder within the party. While speculations are that Nishant might be the next Deputy CM of Bihar, let us take a quick look at the debutant’s journey.
Nitish Kumar resigns as the CM of Bihar

The buzz around Nishant Kumar taking the role of Bihar’s next Deputy Chief Minister has been making rounds for a while now. However, with Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar resigning from his office, the speculations have intensified. The leader sent his resignation letters through emissaries. Bihar Legislative Council Chairman, Avadhesh Narayan Singh paid his regards to the Chief Minister, and revealed that he has accepted Nitish Kumar’s resignation. He added:
“He has been an invaluable leader of the House and devoted himself to Bihar’s cause.”

For the unversed, the resignations have come following a decision stating that the leader was elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16, 2026, and that the deadline for Nitish Kumar’s resignation from the state legislature was March 30, 2026. According to the Prohibition of Simultaneous Membership Rules, 1950, under Articles 101 and 190 of the Constitution, a member elected to both Parliament and a state legislature must resign from one within 14 days.
Who is Nishant Kumar?

Nishant Kumar was born on July 20, 1975. He is the only child of Nitish Kumar and his late wife, Manju Sinha. Unlike many political heirs, Nishant has kept a low profile for most of his life. He completed his early education from St Karen’s School in Patna and later attended Manav Bharti International School in Mussoorie. He earned his degree in software engineering from the Birla Institute of Technology, Mesra, Ranchi.

Initially, Nishant Kumar asserted that he had “no interest” in entering politics and stayed out of the public eye, occasionally making appearances alongside his father at events. People familiar with the family describe him as someone who prefers a quiet, spiritual lifestyle. Despite being the chief minister’s only son, he avoided active political roles for years. As for his personal life, he has remained unmarried and mostly stays in Patna.
Nishant Kumar lost his mother at a young age

Nishant Kumar was only 20 years old when he lost his mother. Nitish Kumar’s wife, Manju Kumari Sinha, passed away on May 14, 2007, due to pneumonia. While not much is known about his bond with his late mother, the loss profoundly impacted him and the Kumar family at large.

While Nishant Kumar initially asserted that he didn’t want to be part of the political world, a lot has changed in the past few years. Not only does the shift mark Nishant’s change of mind, but it also changes Nitish Kumar’s image as an anti-dynasty politician. For decades, Nitish kept a distance from family-based politics. However, Nishant’s entry has clearly changed that stance. Multiple JDU leaders have claimed that the change was due to the growing internal demand, which pushed the party leadership to reconsider its earlier hesitation.

With Bihar’s political field becoming more competitive, the party alleged that it needs a face that offers continuity and connects emotionally with its traditional support base. This was the case with Nishant Kumar. For the unversed, Nitish Kumar’s son’s name, they say, carries a recall value among Kurmis and sections of the backwards and Dalit communities who have stood by Nitish Kumar over the years.
What does Nishant Kumar’s entry in the political world mean for the future of Bihar politics?

Nishant Kumar’s potential political debut comes at a crucial moment for the Janta Dal. Nitish not only turned 75 years old this year, leading to conversations about future leadership, but was also recently elected to the Rajya Sabha. Senior leaders believe that introducing Nishant to the political ground set by his father could help ensure organisational stability in the event of a leadership transition and foster an emotional link between the general public and the new leader.
