GUWAHATI: A mass burial was held for 87 tribal victims of Manipur’s seven-month-long ethnic strife — including a month-old baby boy named Issac, 86-year-old Douthang Haokip, and eight women — in the hill district of Churachandpur on Wednesday.
The event, marked by traditional rituals, drew thousands in attendance despite heavy security measures and prohibitory orders in effect since Monday.The burial was accompanied by gun salutes from tribal volunteers, who referred to the deceased as “martyrs”.
