Veteran actor and filmmaker Revathy recently shared her thoughts after watching Michael, the much-talked-about biopic on pop icon Michael Jackson. Featuring his nephew Jaafar Jackson in the lead, the film appears to have struck a nostalgic chord with the actor.

Taking to social media, Revathy reflected on how the film transported her back to a time when Jackson’s music defined an entire generation. “Watched Michael and was taken back to the early 80s when his music was a rage… what charisma he had, what an artist…” she wrote, capturing the essence of an era shaped by the King of Pop’s global influence.

Her words echo the sentiment shared by many who grew up during Jackson’s peak years, when his music, dance and stage presence were not just popular but cultural landmarks. For audiences of that time, revisiting his journey through cinema can feel like reliving a formative moment in pop history.

“A true artist” and a lasting influence

Continuing her tribute, Revathy emphasised the qualities that set Michael Jackson apart, both as a performer and as an artist with a larger vision. Writing “in memory of MJ,” she added, “He owned the stage he performed on… there is a lot to learn about dedication, focus and being sensitive to the world around, believing that art and music can change the world!!! A true artist is one who is always trying to speak with their Art… in memory of MJ.”

Her note goes beyond admiration and leans into reflection, highlighting the discipline and intent behind Jackson’s artistry. It is a perspective that aligns with how the singer has long been perceived, not merely as an entertainer, but as a creative force who constantly pushed boundaries.

The biopic itself aims to capture that journey. Directed by Antoine Fuqua and written by three-time Oscar nominee John Logan, Michael traces the evolution of Jackson’s life, from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his meteoric rise as a solo global icon. The narrative reportedly spans key milestones, including the defining years leading up to the Bad tour, offering a sweeping look at his career.

Bringing a legend to life on screen

At the centre of the film is Jaafar Jackson, whose casting has drawn significant attention given his real-life connection to the legend. The supporting ensemble features Colman Domingo and Nia Long as Joe and Katherine Jackson, while Miles Teller plays John Branca, the singer’s long-time advisor and attorney.

The film also brings together a host of notable characters from Jackson’s life and career. Larenz Tate steps into the role of Motown founder Berry Gordy, Laura Harrier portrays music executive Suzanne de Passe, and Kat Graham appears as Diana Ross.

Further rounding out the cast are Jessica Sula as La Toya Jackson, Liv Symone as Gladys Knight, Kendrick Sampson as Quincy Jones, Kevin Shinick as Dick Clark and KeiLyn Durrel Jones as Bill Bray, Jackson’s long-time friend and security head.

Described as “an intimate look at the life and enduring legacy of one of the most influential, trailblazing artists the world has ever known,” the film attempts to balance spectacle with introspection. It charts Jackson’s transformation from a child prodigy into a global phenomenon whose impact continues to resonate decades later.

For Revathy, the experience of watching Michael seems to have been less about rediscovery and more about reconnecting with a legacy that never quite faded. Her words serve as a reminder that beyond the controversies and complexities, Michael Jackson’s artistry remains a benchmark for performers across generations.
