Lorry driver held for illegal sand mining from Palar river near Arcot town

The police on Tuesday arrested a lorry driver for mining sand from the dry riverbed of Palar at Sakkaramallur village near Arcot town in Ranipet.

On a tip-off, a police team intercepted C. Vijayakumar, 34, near the Cheyyar Main Road. He was driving his lorry, loaded with river sand, and sped up the vehicle upon seeing the police. After a brief chase, the police nabbed him, and lodged him at the Central Prison in Vellore
