A double murder by a spurned lover has sent shock waves across Bihar’s Motihari. The accused, 20-year-old Shilpi Kumari, allegedly killed her boyfriend’s grandfather by setting him on fire while he slept. Later, she murdered a five-year-old girl by slitting her throat in an attempt to frame another woman.

The whole case came to light following the disappearance of 5-year-old Anshika Kumari on March 20. After her body was found two days later, police began investigating the matter, leading to Shilpi’s arrest. Shocking details emerged following the investigation, revealing not one but two murders committed by the accused.

According to police, Shilpi had been in a relationship with Nitish Kumar since 2024. After Nitish’s grandfather opposed their relationship, she set him on fire while he was asleep. She also set several fires in the village to mislead investigators.

Later, she lured Ansika to her home, coerced her into making statements against her mother, recorded them on a phone, and killed the child. She dumped the body in a field to avoid detection. The 20-year-old believed that Ansika’s mother had instigated Nitish against her.

Shilpi remains in custody while further legal proceedings are underway.

Motihari Police used scientific methods like internet data analysis and technical evidence like a video clip involving Anshika’s coerced confession to crack the case. They also recovered two knives, blood-stained clothing and the mobile phone used in the crime.

Describing the case as “extremely complex”, Motihari SP Swarn Prabhat confirmed that the case was solved only due to the scientific methods used by the probe team. He stated that the team involved in solving the crime would be rewarded.
