Iowa legend Caitlin Clark returned to her college court Sunday with a playful jab at WNBA referees, setting the tone ahead of her sophomore season with the Indiana Fever.
Fresh off a standout rookie year, Clark was back at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City for the first time since her senior season, drawing a sold-out crowd for an exhibition game against Brazil’s national team.
Before tipoff, Clark met with the press and shared her excitement about being back in Iowa. During the conversation, she also made a pointed, and humorous, remark directed at WNBA officials.
“Wouldn’t be Caitlin Clark if she didn’t mention the refs,” reporter Meghan L. Hall posted on X.
“Just briefly mentioned them needing to ‘swallow their whistle.’ I’m cracking up. Said it stone-faced.”

The comment came just days after Clark missed the Fever’s preseason opener against the Washington Mystics due to a minor leg injury. Despite her absence, Indiana pulled off a 79-74 overtime win, sealed by six late free throws.
Clark is expected to make her preseason debut against Brazil before the team wraps up its exhibition schedule next Saturday against Brittney Griner and the Atlanta Dream. The Fever will officially tip off the 2025 WNBA season on May 17 against the Chicago Sky.
Now in her second year, Clark enters the season after an extraordinary rookie campaign. She averaged 19.2 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 8.4 assists per game, led the Fever to their first playoff appearance in eight years, earned Rookie of the Year honors, and was named to the All-WNBA First Team.
With a fiery comment and her return to the court, Caitlin Clark is once again drawing attention, and reminding fans and officials alike that her presence will be felt in every game.
