CITU alleges irregularities in Thanjavur Corporation employees’ thrift society, demands DVAC probe

The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU), affiliated to the Communist Party of India (Marxist), has alleged that the Thanjavur Corporation has failed to remit the principal and interest amount of over ₹10 crore deducted from the salaries of its employees to the cooperative thrift society.

In a petition to the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption, Thanjavur, on April 30, Anbu, Deputy Secretary, Thanjavur District CITU, said that several sanitation workers of the Corporation had taken loans from the thrift society since 2017 with a facility to repay it through equated monthly instalment deducted from their salary.

However, it came to light that the officials concerned had failed to comply with this arrangement resulting in employees, including the retired persons, receiving notices about pending dues from the thrift society. Claiming that issuance of such notices had raised suspicion about irregularities, the CITU has sought a probe into the non-remittance of funds deducted from the salary of civic body employees to the thrift society account.
