CSK’s Khaleel Ahmed bowls most expensive spell, leaks 33 runs in 19th over vs RCB

Chennai Super Kings pacer Khaleel Ahmed was handed an unwanted record during his side’s clash against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on May 3 in the IPL 2025, when he conceded 33 runs in the 19th over of the first innings and gave away a staggering 65 runs in his three-over spell. Khaleel was mercilessly punished by RCB all-rounder Romario Shepherd, who launched the CSK pacer to all corners of the Chinnaswamy Stadium on Saturday.

Batting first, RCB batters experienced a mixed outing against CSK’s bowling attack. Openers Jacob Bethell and Virat Kohli led a powerplay onslaught, taking on Khaleel, Matheesha Pathirana, Anshul Kamboj, and even Sam Curran with aggression. However, the middle order — featuring Devdutt Padikkal, skipper Rajat Patidar, and Jitesh Sharma — failed to build on the strong start.

IPL 2025: RCB vs CSK: Updates

It was Romario Shepherd’s late entry that proved disastrous for CSK, particularly for Khaleel Ahmed. The West Indian’s fireworks turned the innings on its head, taking Khaleel apart in brutal fashion.

Khaleel ultimately conceded 65 runs from his 3 overs — the most ever by any bowler in IPL history. Earlier this season, Rajasthan Royals pacer Jofra Archer had registered the most expensive spell of 76 runs in four overs against Sunrisers Hyderabad. However, mathematically, Khaleel gave away more runs per over and in fewer overs, making his the costliest spell on record.

At 157/5 in 17.4 overs after the dismissal of Patidar, a 200-plus total looked increasingly unlikely for RCB. But Romario’s explosive batting flipped the script completely as the hosts surged to 213/5 against CSK.
