The cybercrime police have registered an FIR against five persons for allegedly posting abusive comments on a Facebook post over the attack on Chief Justice of India B.R. Gavai.

Based on the complaint by Shreeshail Nagaloor, head constable with the cyber crime station, the police charged the accused identified as Kesari Nandan, Sridhar Kumar, Nagendra Prasad, Ramesh Naik and Manjunath M.C. charging them under Section 67 (publishing or transmitting obscene material in electronic form), Section 66 (computer related offences) and Section 66(c) (identity theft) and also under Section 352 (intentional insult with the intent or knowledge that it will provoke a breach of public peace) of BNS on Tuesday (October 7, 2025) for further investigation.

One of the accused allegedly supported the act and advocated an escalated action, and all these comments amount to defamatory statement against a judge and attempt to provoke the breach of peace, said the police.

The police are now trying to track down the accused through their FB accounts to ascertain their background and the reason for posting such comments.

BU students, faculty hold protest

Post-graduate students and research scholars, and faculty members staged a protest at Jnanabharati campus of Bangalore University (BU) condemning the incident where an attempt was made to attack CJI Gavai, on October 9, 2025.

Hundreds of students and faculty members marched from the Dr. B.R. Ambedkar Library at Jnana Bharathi campus, wearing black armbands, and gathered in front of the Administrative Office, raising slogans and condemning the act.

Speaking on the occasion, Prof. B.N. Muralidhar said, “Throwing a slipper at the Chief Justice is not merely an act against an individual but a reflection of a mindset that must be opposed. We must fight against such a mentality and eradicate it completely. As Kuvempu envisioned, we must move towards universal humanism. The next generation should not inherit or continue this mindset. Everyone must condemn this incident and work towards building an equal society.”

Following the protest, the Union submitted a memorandum to Dr. Jayakara S.M., Vice-Chancellor of Bangalore University, urging that a resolution of condemnation be passed in both the Academic Council and Syndicate meetings of the University regarding this incident.
