The Delhi Police have registered a case against unknown people in connection with the death of a Class 11 boy after he fell from the roof of a mall on Sunday.

According to the police, Kavin Kumar, 16, allegedly climbed onto the fragile roof of North Gate Orbit Plaza Mall to create reels with his friends. The police said that Kumar, in an attempt to impress his friends, tried to cross over the domed roof a second time and fell through an ill-maintained fibreglass panel, leading to his death.

The police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The mall has been in an abandoned state since 2012, and its structure was not properly maintained, the police said.

Kumar was rushed to Pentamed Hospital, where he was declared dead by the doctors.

However, Kumar’s family members alleged that they suspected foulplay in the boy’s death. “We received a call from a family friend that Kumar had met with an accident. Her son, who is also Kumar’s friend, had seen the crowd and police at the mall. He saw the boy lying there on the floor,” alleged Munit Kumar, the boy’s paternal uncle.

“All his friends had run away. The police were called by the staff of a restaurant inside the mall,” said the boy’s uncle.
