NEW DELHI: Initiating action in coordination with various intermediaries, ministry of information and broadcasting blocked 18 over-the-top (OTT) platforms for obscene and vulgar language content on Thursday. The ministry also blocked multiple websites, applications and social media handles of the blocked OTTs nationwide for violation of IT Act, IPC and Indecent Representation of Women (Prohibition) Act.
The action has disabled 19 websites, 10 apps (seven on Google Play store, three on Apple App store), and 57 social media accounts associated with these platforms for public access in India.

I&B minister Anurag Singh Thakur emphasised the responsibility of platforms to not propagate obscenity, vulgarity and abuse under guise of “creative expression.” The decision was taken under the provisions of the IT Act, 2000 in consultation with other ministries/ departments and domain experts. The OTTs include Neon X VIP, Dream films, Uncut Adda, Mojflix, and Prime Play, among others.
