Gujarat Police have arrested two men who allegedly used Google Maps to identify and target temples, carrying out thefts at night and selling stolen jewellery in Kutch district, officials said on Sunday.
The case came to light after a burglary at Khodiyar Mata and Ramapir temples in Moti Hamirpar village, where jewellery worth Rs 1,10,150 was stolen. Acting swiftly, police cracked the case within days.
The accused, identified as Panchabhai Koli from Gedi and Javed Ghanchi from Umaiya, were arrested while allegedly on their way to Radhanpur to dispose of the stolen items. Based on a tip-off, police intercepted the duo and recovered jewellery, cash, and mobile phones from their possession.
During interrogation, officials found that Ghanchi, who was adept at using mobile technology, would scan Google Maps to locate temples in remote areas. The two would then travel on foot at night, break open locks using a sharp iron tool typically used for cutting coconuts, and steal valuables.
The arrests have helped police solve multiple thefts, including incidents reported at Selari temple.
Officials said they have recovered items including 14 silver umbrellas, a silver-like metal snake, cash, and mobile phones, with the total value of seized property pegged at around Rs 10 lakh. Additionally, Rs 2,28,160 in cash was recovered.
Police said three cases have been registered against Javed Ghanchi and two against Panchabhai Koli under various sections of the law.
Further investigation into the matter is underway.
