In a chilling case from Bihar’s Katihar district, police have uncovered how a 75-year-old man allegedly tried to pass off his wife’s murder as a jackal attack.
The incident dates back to April 2 in Azamnagar, where 70-year-old Ramni Devi was reported to have died after being allegedly attacked by a jackal while cutting grass in a maize field in the Alampur Diara area. She later succumbed to her injuries during treatment. Her grandson had initially lodged a written complaint with the local police claiming it was an animal attack, while the family performed her last rites soon after.
However, after receiving the complaint, police launched an investigation and visited the spot. The case took a dramatic turn when the FSL team recovered a sharp knife from near the crime scene. The recovery made it clear that the elderly woman had not died from an animal bite, but was fatally attacked with a sharp-edged weapon.
During sustained questioning of family members, the truth finally emerged. Police said Ramni Devi’s husband, Dhaneshwar Singh, had attacked her with the knife while the couple was cutting grass in the maize field. She was critically injured in the assault and later died during treatment.
Investigators further found that the victim’s two grandsons helped conceal the crime by hiding the murder weapon in the same maize field after the incident, in an apparent attempt to strengthen the false jackal attack story.
Azamnagar police have arrested all three accused, the husband and both grandsons, and sent them to jail.
Confirming the breakthrough, Barsoi SDPO Ajay Kumar said the murder was the result of personal enmity between the elderly couple while they were working in the field. He added that the involvement of both grandsons in hiding the knife was established during the probe.
Police said all three accused, the grandfather and the two grandsons, have confessed to the crime during interrogation.
