NEW DELHI: Detroit Lions have activated linebacker James Houston from injured reserve. Simultaneously, the team has decided to waive linebacker Julian Okwara. The transactions were confirmed by the Lions on Thursday.
Houston’s return to the active roster comes after being designated to return from injured reserve on December 28. The 25-year-old linebacker had been sidelined since suffering a right ankle fracture during Detroit’s 37-31 overtime loss to the Seattle Seahawks on September 17, 2023.With his activation, Houston is anticipated to play a key role in the Lions’ upcoming NFC divisional round playoff game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on Sunday afternoon.
Expressing his eagerness to return to the field, Houston stated, “I’m ready to get out there. It looks like it’s fun. They’re winning, and the whole city is behind them, so I want to be out there,” as reported by the Detroit Free Press.

In his rookie season last year, Houston showcased his impact on the field by recording eight sacks in seven games, including two starts. The Lions selected him in the sixth round of the 2022 NFL Draft, and his return adds depth and experience to the team’s defensive lineup.
On the flip side, the Lions decided to waive Julian Okwara, a 26-year-old linebacker who contributed seven tackles and two sacks in nine games, making one start during the current season.
The moves reflect the team’s strategic adjustments as they prepare for the playoff clash against the Buccaneers, aiming to continue their impressive run with a potential deep postseason run.
