Kerala Institute of Local Administration (KILA) conducted mock drills that were organised at three centres in the Chelachuvadu town near Cheruthoni in Idukki. According to officials, the mock drills are being organised in association with the Fire and Rescue Services, Police, District Disaster Management Authority(DDMA), Local Self Government, Health Department and the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB).

The landslide prevention training was held for 11 panchayats in Idukki, such as Vannappuram, Velliyamattom, Karimannoor, Udumbannoor, Alakkode, Kudayathoor, Arakkulam, Vathikkudy, Mariyapuram, Vazhthope and Idukki-Kanjikuzhy.

The assembly point for the mock drill was located at the Chelchuvad bus stand premises, while the tragedy occurred in the Chelachuvadu library hall area, and the shelter camp was set up at the Churuli St Thomas Parish hall. The rescue operations, primary treatment and shifting the injured persons to hospital were part of the mock drill.

After the mock drill a public meeting was held at Churuli St Thomas Parish Hall. Kanjikkuzhi panchayat president Vakkachan Vayalil inaugurated the public meeting. Idukki tehsildar Ram Benoy presided over the meeting.

According to officials, the mock drills tested emergency preparedness and response in hospitals, schools, government offices, etc.

According to officials, the civil defence mock drill was held at five centres in Idukki. The mock drill was conducted as per the central government’s direction.
