The Lucknow police on Saturday recorded the statement of folk singer and activist Neha Singh Rathore in connection with a case in which she was booked for allegedly making objectionable remarks on social media about the Pahalgam terrorist attack.
The case against Rathore, who is widely known for her politically charged Bhojpuri ballads, was registered at the Hazratganj police station in April last year.
Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP), Lucknow, Vikas Kumar Jaiswal said Rathore was summoned to record her statement in the case. “She was called to the Hazratganj police station in connection with the case registered earlier last year. She arrived in the evening, her statement was recorded, and she later left,” Jaiswal said.
Rathore is accused of allegedly posting videos and statements on social media platform X (formerly Twitter) in which she questioned the deaths of victims in the Pahalgam terror attack. Her remarks came in the aftermath of the attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where terrorists allegedly targeted and killed 26 people, most of them tourists, after verifying their religious identities.
The case was lodged on the complaint of a local resident, Abhay Pratap Singh, who accused Rathore of sharing posts that allegedly sought to promote sectarian animosity and posed a threat to the nation’s sovereignty, unity, and integrity. The complainant further stated that such objectionable posts could adversely impact national integrity and public harmony.
Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Rathore under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
