Nidhin Valsan, an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer currently serving as Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central District), Delhi, has come into the public spotlight after leading a demolition drive near Turkman Gate aimed at removing the illegal encroachments in the area.
The operation was carried out following directions related to court orders on encroachments around the historic Turkman Gate. During the drive, municipal authorities, backed by police personnel, moved to demolish structures, including a banquet hall and a dispensary located near a mosque. The action triggered protests from local residents, with tensions escalating as sections of the crowd allegedly resorted to stone pelting. Police responded with crowd-control measures, including the use of tear gas, and several police personnel were reported injured in the clashes.
Addressing the situation, officials said the police were only enforcing legal orders and that strict action would be taken against those who attempted to disrupt law and order during the operation. The demolition drive has since sparked political reactions and public debate, given Turkman Gate’s sensitive historical and social significance.
Beyond the immediate controversy, DCP Nidhin Valsan’s personal and professional journey has drawn widespread attention. A native of Kannur district in Kerala, Valsan belongs to the 2012 batch of the IPS. He has previously served in key policing roles in Goa, Lakhsdeep and Delhi, earning a reputation for firm action against drug networks and land encroachments during his tenure as Superintendent of Police in North Goa.
Diagnosed with Cancer in 2021
Valsan, an AGMUT 2012 batch IPS officer is also known for his extraordinary personal resilience. In 2021, he was diagnosed with Stage-4 Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, a life-threatening form of cancer. After undergoing prolonged treatment, he made a full recovery, an experience he has publicly described as transformative. Later, he wrote an inspiring memoir book, ‘Cancerman to Ironman, a police officer’s journey of arresting illness.’ The book, is presented as an inspiring example of hope, determination, and overcoming adversity.
Recovery and comeback
Following his recovery, Valsan went on to complete the grueling Ironman Triathlon, one of the world’s toughest endurance competitions, which includes a 3.8-kilometre swim, a 180-kilometre cycling segment, and a full marathon of 42.2 kilometres. His achievement was widely lauded as a symbol of determination and mental strength.
As the Turkman Gate demolition continues to remain under public scrutiny, Nidhin Valsan stands out as an officer whose career combines high-profile policing responsibilities with a personal story of perseverance that has inspired many within and outside the police force.
