Mexican tacos made with a spiced chicken taco filling topped with fresh ingredients like onions, lettuce, tomatoes and cheese. All these are loaded inside crisp shell with salsa, guacamole, sour cream to add so much taste to the tacos. This recipe is an authentic recipe for a simple tacos made with chicken.

My husband loves tacos and I make it quite often for him. You can buy taco shell in super market these days they are easily available. I still remember the first time when I used the taco shell, I forgot to toast it in oven, which made my taco shell taste soggy.

But now whenever I use store bought shell, I bake them in a 180 degree oven for few minute to toast them which gets super crispy shell like. Once assembled with all the fixings and toppings, it taste so delicious. 

About Mexican Chicken Tacos

Tacos is one of the most popular Mexican dish that is loved by most people across the world. It is made either with soft tortilla or crispy taco shell. You fill them with spiced minced meat or refried beans as protein.

There are more than hundreds of tacos made across Mexico like Birria tacos, Al Pastor (marinated pork with pineapple), Carne Asada (grilled steak), and Carnitas (slow-cooked pork) and more.

This is a close to authentic taco recipe that uses chicken, instead of chicken, beef, turkey or lamb mince can be used. A flavourful seasoned meat is made and filled inside crispy taco shell with toppings.

A good taco gets it taste from all the toppings you add like salsa, onions, lettuce, cheese, tomatoes, sour creamguacamole.

You will need crisp taco shells, you can use soft whole wheat, corn or flour tortilla. You need Homemade sour cream, shredded mozzarella cheese, Mexican Salsa, shredded lettuce, coriander leaves, chopped raw onions, chopped tomatoes and lemon wedges.

Ingredients

  • Oil – I used olive oil for cooking the filling.
  • Chicken – I used minced chicken for the filling. Grind couple of boneless chicken breast in a food processor to get minced meat.
  • Onions & green onions – finely chopped onions and green onions adds necessary sweet flavour to the filling.
  • Garlic & chillies – fresh garlic and chillies adds the flavour to the chicken filling.
  • Spices – I used readymade taco seasoning packets and extra red chilli powder for spice. For making homemade taco seasoning, Mix 1 tablespoon red chilli powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon oregano, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder.
  • Tomato – fresh tomato puree or tomato paste can be used. If using tomato paste, use just couple of tbsp.
  • Flavourings – salt, lemon, coriander leaves adds the aroma.

Step by Step pictures

Taco Filling

1)Heat oil in a pan, add in onions, spring onions, green chillies and saute for 1 minute.

2)Now add in garlic paste and cook until raw smell leaves. It will take a couple of minute.

3)Pour in tomato puree and cook until raw smell leaves and the mix thickens.

4)Let the tomato cook down and oil separates from the mixture.

5)Add in chicken mince and saute with onions for couple of minutes. Cook chicken with onion garlic till chicken is crumbled and cooks.

6)Now add in taco seasoning, paprika and salt and mix well.

7)Pour in ¼ cup of water.

8)cook everything covered for 10 minutes on low heat.

9)Now add in lemon juice and coriander leaves and mix well.

11)This is your chicken taco filling.

Toast Taco Shell

12)Take your taco shell, place it open side down on a baking tray. Place this into a 180 degree C oven and bake for 5 minutes. Remove from oven and cool completely.

Toppings for Tacos

13)Take all ingredients for taco toppings. You need freshly chopped onions, tomatoes, shredded lettuce, coriander leaves. You also need guacamole, salsa, cheese, sour cream.

Assemble Tacos

14)Now take a taco shell, place it on a serving place.

15)spoon in chicken filling.

16)Top with cheese and shredded lettuce.

17)top with onions, tomatoes.

18)Top with salsa, guacamole, sour cream, coriander leaves. Enjoy.


Expert Tips

Choosing Protein – I used minced chicken, you can use minced lamb, crumbled tofu, turkey instead of chicken.

Taco Seasoning – readymade taco seasonings is available in the market, but you can make it easily at home by mixing bunch of spices.

Variations – if you don’t want to serve the filling in a taco shell, you can easily make a rice bowl using the filling and toppings.

Serving – Enjoy tacos immediately as soon as it is made for best texture.

Storage – taco toppings and filling can be made and stored in fridge upto 3 to 4 days.

For making homemade taco seasoning, Mix 1 tablespoon red chilli powder, 1 teaspoon cumin, 1 teaspoon paprika, ½ teaspoon oregano, ½ teaspoon onion powder, ½ teaspoon garlic powder, ½ teaspoon salt, and ¼ teaspoon black pepper powder.

Can I use tortilla instead of taco shell?

Yes, of course you can use corn or flour tortilla instead of shell.
