Microsoft has announced that it is opening a new AI hub in London – a place where Google-owned DeepMind has its headquarters. The news comes a few days after Microsoft created Microsoft AI – an organisation to help advance its consumer AI products and research, including Copilot.
“Microsoft AI London will drive pioneering work to advance state-of-the-art language models and their supporting infrastructure, and to create world-class tooling for foundation models, collaborating closely with our AI teams across Microsoft and with our partners, including OpenAI,” said Mustafa Suleyman, EVP and CEO of Microsoft AI.
Suleyman is also the co-founder of Deepmind. The AI hub will be led by Jordan Hoffmann, who has also worked with Suleyman at Inflection and DeepMind.

Suleyman also said that Microsoft AI plans to make a significant, long-term investment in the region as it begins “hiring the best AI scientists and engineers into this new AI hub.” In the coming weeks and months, Microsoft AI will be posting job openings and “actively hiring exceptional individuals who want to work on the most interesting and challenging AI questions of our time.”
Apart from the newly-opened Microsoft AI hub in London, Microsoft has the Microsoft Research Cambridge lab, where researchers work in the areas of AI, cloud and productivity.
Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella hired Suleyman to lead the company’s consumer AI products and R&D, especially hyping up Copilot, the company’s AI tool.
“We have a real shot to build technology that was once thought impossible and that lives up to our mission to ensure the benefits of AI reach every person and organisation on the planet, safely and responsibly. I’m looking forward to doing so with you,” Nadella said in a memo to employees.
