Foodborne outbreaks declined in Sweden in 2024, but the number of people sick in them increased.

Data reveals the foodborne illness cases reported to the Swedish Food Agency (Livsmedelsverket) in 2024. According to the report, the infectious agent was often unknown making it hard to put preventive measures in place.

There were 381 reports of suspected or confirmed foodborne outbreaks, involving 2,312 illnesses. In 354 of the reports, two or more individuals were infected through a common source. Compared to 2023, the number of outbreaks decreased slightly, but more people fell ill.
