What defines an exceptional city? For some, it’s the vibrant neighborhoods, the affordability of dining and entertainment options, and a rich array of cultural activities, from art exhibitions and museums to live performances and theater. Others might emphasize the contentment of the residents, the availability of green spaces, and a sense of strong community spirit.
Time Out’s survey delves into these aspects and more, inviting urban residents globally to share their experiences of living, working, and enjoying leisure time in their cities at present. Leveraging the perspectives and knowledge of local inhabitants, coupled with our extensive network of city experts worldwide, we’ve been able to compile a comprehensive ranking of the world’s premier cities – and the results for 2024 are now available.
Topping the list this year is New York City, acclaimed for its vibrant food scene, rich culture, stunning beauty, and the general happiness of its residents. The city’s allure is so strong that 15% of survey respondents expressed a desire to relocate to the Big Apple. Shaye Weaver, editor of Time Out New York, remarked, “New York City’s resilience, constant innovation, and trendsetting nature are what draw people back repeatedly.”
Cape Town, South Africa, clinched the second spot, celebrated for its dynamic cultural scene, which includes numerous galleries, studios, and public events like the Cape Town Art Fair, the largest art fair in Africa.
Mumbai, the only Indian city in top 20, is ranked at 12th.
As per the Time Out survey, Mumbai encapsulates the essence of India, offering a mosaic of experiences that range from historical depth to contemporary vibrancy, spiritual sanctuaries to sporting fervor, and traces of colonial heritage to the pulsating rhythm of modern life. This is all accentuated by the enchanting allure of Bollywood and the soothing touch of the Arabian Sea’s breeze. The city is a playground of contrasts.
