NEW DELHI: Nearly 100 flights were delayed on Friday morning after visibility at Indira Gandhi International Airport dropped to 0 metres due to the formation of very dense fog. However, no flight was diverted or cancelled, said Delhi airport officials.
Met officials said that the procedures under CAT III were enforced at the airport. “Runway visual range remains at range of 125 to 200m in Cat IIIB,” said RK Jenamani, senior scientist, India Meteorological Department.
According to IMD, the visibility remained below 200 metres at IGI Airport from 4.30 am to 9.30 am.The department has predicted dense to very dense fog during the morning hours on the weekend. IMD has placed a ‘yellow’ alert for dense fog on Saturday and Sunday.
Officials said the airport initiates low visibility procedures — measures aimed at making landing for flights easier when visibility dips below 800 metres. During this period, CAT-I procedures, which are a basic set of precautions, are initiated for visibility above 550 metres.
The CAT-II compliant pilots can land when visibility is between 275-550 metres and CAT-III A and B pilots can land when visibility is below 275 metres and even at 50 metres.
