Nikitin Dheer gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Thangabali in the Bollywood blockbuster “Chennai Express.” Despite the film’s success catapulting him into the limelight, not many people know that Nikitin Dheer did not have any work opportunities for 11 months post the release of the film. Recently, in an exclusive conversation with ETimes TV, Nikitin shared that he kept waiting for offers but nothing came his way.
Speaking about the phase, the actor shared, “I had thought Chennai Express would be a movie that would change my life. While shooting for the show we had great vibes, we knew the film is going to do well. As actors you mostly get the feeling about your project. I was very sure and when the film opened it got one of the biggest openings of Shah Rukh Khan’s sir and Deepika Padukone’s career and sidelined a lot of other films. Overnight people started recognising me and I felt Chalo finally after so many years of hard work, now I’ve arrived. But you won’t believe for over a year, 11 months post release of Chennai Express, I had no work. I kept waiting and I did not get any offers at all. I did not get a single offer at that point of time. I thought I would get at least from South if not from Hindi film industry but there was no work.”
Nikitin, who has appeared in films like “Jodhaa Akbar,” “Ready,” “Sooryavanshi,” “Shershaah,” among others, elaborated on how people gave him excuses for not offering him work during that period. He said, “Everyone kept giving me some or other reason or stories. Ab main kya bataun aapko. They would tell me you are too tall, you are too fair then you shouldn’t remove your beard and should always have a beard as it intimidates the leading man. You are very well build, you should gain some weight than it will make you look less intimidating. I would just laugh at all these reasons and would just say okay sir.”
However, Nikitin did not give up and instead tried his hand at reality shows on the small screen, hoping for a breakthrough. “Uske baad jab kaam nahi aaya and everybody had this image of Thangabali in their heads, someone suggested me to do reality shows as audience will get to see the real me. That’s when I did Khatron Ke Khiladi because Jhalak and Bigg Boss is not my cup of tea. I did Khatron as I felt people will at least get to see the real me. That was very good for me as far as audience reactions was concerned. They saw another side to me. But that when I decided that this is enough and I just want to act and speak through my work. I honestly believe that sometimes it is just about the timing and destiny. When your time is right you will get it, Aur nahi hona hoga toh nahi hoga. Hum se bhi bade bade log hain who have not got their due,” he concluded.
