Punjab Education Budget 2024: On Tuesday, Harpal Singh Cheema, the Finance Minister of Punjab, presented the budget for the upcoming fiscal year, 2024-25. In a significant move, the minister declared the AAP-led government’s plan to upgrade 100 government senior secondary schools into high-quality educational institutions termed ‘schools of brilliance’. Additionally, the government aims to enhance 100 primary government schools into ‘schools of happiness’.
Cheema unveiled the state’s budget in the assembly for the fiscal year 2024-25, proposing a total budget of more than Rs. 2 lakh crore. The Punjab Budget 2024-25 designates Rs 16,987 crore for the education sector, accounting for approximately 11.5 percent of the projected total spending in the coming fiscal year.

Cheema explained plans for the education sector, stating that 118 government schools will be upgraded to modern ‘schools of eminence’, with 14 already in progress. The government has allocated Rs 100 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25 for this initiative. Additionally, Cheema mentioned that 100 government senior secondary schools will be converted into ‘schools of brilliance’. He noted that an initial budget of Rs 10 crore has been set aside for this endeavor.
The government plans to convert 100 primary government schools into ‘schools of happiness’, aiming to provide a supportive and educational atmosphere for children aged 3 to 11. Emphasis will be on offering well-ventilated classrooms, designated play areas, resource rooms, and activity corners, according to Cheema.
In his budget speech, Cheema expressed that the goal for the AAP government isn’t just to achieve a Punjab where people can read and write, but rather, to create an educated Punjab. He emphasised the importance of instilling knowledge, morality, and sensibility in children, aiming for a well-rounded education.
In his budget speech, Cheema highlighted several achievements, including the regularisation of 12,316 teachers, hiring of 9,518 new teachers, training for principals and headmasters to enhance their skills, enhancing security measures in schools, providing over 12,000 internet connections, repairing approximately 4,300 school toilets, and ensuring timely delivery of books to students.
He further mentioned the government’s plan to introduce ‘Mission Samrath’, aimed at teaching crucial skills to primary and upper primary students. The proposed budget for this initiative in the fiscal year 2024-25 is Rs 10 crore.
Regarding the medical education and research field, Cheema mentioned, “I suggest allocating Rs 1,133 crore in the fiscal year 2024-25 for various developmental projects in medical education and research. This includes funds specifically designated for establishing a girls’ hostel at Government Ayurvedic College, Patiala.”
