  • 3/4 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup toor dal
  • 1 lemon size tamarind
  • 2 tbsp oil
  • 3 tbsp ghee
  • 1/2 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1/2 tsp cumin seeds
  • 1/4 tsp hing
  • 10 to 12 curry leaves
  • 10 to 12 whole black pepper
  • 2 dried red chillies
  • 8 to 10 garlic cloves
  • 2 green chillies
  • 4 small onions cut in half
  • 1 tomato large
  • 1/2 tsp Kashmiri red chilli powder
  • 3/4 tsp spicy red chilli powder
  • 1/4 tsp turmeric powder
  • 1/2 tsp coriander powder
  • 1 tsp rasam powder or sambar masala
  • Salt to taste
  • 5 cups water (Add 4 times water of the total rice and dal
  • Fresh coriander leaves
  • Wash rice and toor dal together and soak for 15 minutes.

  • Soak tamarind in water and extract the pulp.

  • Heat oil and ghee in a pressure cooker.

  • Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, hing, dried red chilli, curry leaves, and whole black pepper.

  • Add garlic and green chillies, sauté for a few seconds.

  • Add onions and tomato, cook till slightly soft.

  • Add red chilli powder, turmeric, coriander powder, rasam powder, and salt.

  • Add soaked rice and dal.

  • Pour about 5 cups water.(Add 5 cups water or adjust slightly depending on the consistency you prefer)

  • Mix everything well.

  • Close the lid and cook for 2-3 whistles.

  • Let the pressure release naturally.

  • Once done add tamarind extract and coriander leaves, mix wee.

  • Serve hot.

Adjust tamarind as per taste.
Add more water if you prefer softer consistency.
Ghee enhances flavor, do not skip.
