Food companies and governmental bodies need to take measures to ensure that primary producers — and therefore consumers — benefit from technological advancements to control foodborne illnesses, according to recently published research.
The research, published in the Frontiers Nutrition Journal, was edited by Yuan Su of the The University of Tennessee-Knoxville.
The article used two outbreaks as examples: the Boars Head deli meats Listeria monocytogenes outbreak in 2024 and the McDonalds-Taylor Farms onions E. coli O157:H7 outbreak in 2024-2025. These two outbreaks were partly focused on because of their scale and the involvement of major national food brands, which amplified public awareness.
