The Travancore Devaswom Board (TDB) on Thursday capped spot booking for Sabarimala darshan at 5,000 people per day, following directions from the Kerala High Court. Officials said the restriction will remain in place until November 24.
According to a TDB press release, spot booking will now be available only at the Nilakkal and Vandiperiyar centres, while the facility has been temporarily suspended at Pampa, Erumeli, and Chengannur. Devotees have been urged to use the Virtual Queue system and report at the allotted date and time to ensure smooth crowd flow.
The Kerala High Court’s division bench of Justices Raja Vijayaraghavan V and KV Jayakumar came down heavily on the board, observing that arrangements at the hill shrine had “spiralled out of control” after nearly two lakh pilgrims arrived within 48 hours of the temple opening on November 17.
With nearly one lakh devotees allowed darshan daily during the Mandalam–Makaravilakku season and over 50 lakh visitors annually, the court said the current systems were inadequate.
Meanwhile, a review meeting of various departments was held at Sabarimala on Thursday to assess the ongoing pilgrimage arrangements. Chaired by Additional District Magistrate Arun S Nair, the meeting evaluated that the crowd has now been brought under control and that a smooth, safe darshan is being ensured.
Officials said the shortcomings seen in the initial days have been resolved, and reviewed key areas including emergency medical support, crowd management, sanitation, drinking water, and food supply.
