Sahitya parishat opposes proposed by-law amendments; urge State govt. to probe its financial transactions

Shivamogga

Lifetime members of Kannada Sahitya Parishat in Shivamogga have opposed the amendments proposed for the by-law of the parishat stating that they would encourage dictatorial rule in the organisation.

In a press conference in Shivamogga on Thursday, life members Honnali Chandrashekhar, K.P. Sripal, B. Chandre Gowda, Puttaiah, and others said that parishat president Mahesh Joshi had drafted the amendments in such a way that they enhance his powers at the cost of basic principles of democracy.

“The general body scheduled to be held on April 27 was postponed due to the opposition. Now, the same had been scheduled for June 22. We will oppose the amendments that are aimed at enhancing the president’s powers,” said Mr. Chandrashekhar.

Mr. Chandrashekhar said that Mr. Joshi wanted to sideline the executive committee and hold all administrative powers with him. “We appeal to all the lifetime members to oppose such amendments. We will also support a meeting convened by people of Mandya on May 17 on this issue,” he said.

Further, Mr. Chandrashekhar appealed to the State government to probe into the financial transactions of the parishat. There had been allegations of misappropriation of funds in organising the sahitya sammelana in Mandya, he said.
