GANDHINAGAR: The state govt told the legislative assembly on Tuesday that admissions under the Right to Education (RTE) Act of seven students were cancelled in Ahmedabad city, after it emerged that their parents’ income exceeded the limits laid down in the Act.
Danilimda MLA Shailesh Parmar sought information on bogus admissions secured under the RTE Act, action taken and measures the government was taking to prevent such bogus admissions.
In reply, the state govt said that in the ongoing academic year (2023-24), seven admissions taken fraudulently under the RTE Act were cancelled. The state govt said that parents who have been paying income tax have been asked to upload their I-T returns while filling RTE forms. The government added that through this, forms can be rejected at the initial stage itself.
Meanwhile, some private schools sought the services of private detective agencies to verify the financial conditions of students admitted in the RTE Act. One agency discovered that one such parent, who had declared an annual income below Rs 1.5 lakh according to the RTE guidelines, had paid a staggering Rs 50,000 in fees to enrol the child in a playgroup. Shockingly, this parent had filed income tax returns indicating annual income of Rs 18 lakh.
Five private schools in Ahmedabad raised concerns about 308 students gaining admission under RTE in the past few years based on fabricated documents and false declarations. In response, the Ahmedabad city district education officer (DEO) initiated an investigation, summoning these parents for a hearing. Sources in DEO’s office said the hearings are continuing and more fraudulent admission may be cancelled.
A few weeks ago, the CMO ordered an inquiry against a teacher who got her son admitted under the RTE Act based on false income details.
