During an immigration enforcement operation on Saturday, a man suddenly fired at the US Border Patrol agents in Chicago, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said, though the Chicago Police Department said it did not find anyone injured, Reuters reported.

The statement by DHS added that the suspect, who was driving a black Jeep, still remains at large. The police department of Chicago said that officers responded to shots being fired in the area and secured the region with a cordon and stated that no one was injured in the firing.

The Chicago Police, in a statement said, “There are no reports of anyone struck by gunfire.” Following immigration raids in Little Village, a neighborhood of Chicago, protests started taking place on Saturday and the incident of shots being fired at the immigration officers was reported. A Reuters report, quoting a witness, stated that police detained a person after an argument with residents during the immigration raid.

During the immigration raid, “agitators” threw paint cans and bricks at the vehicles of Border Patrol on Saturday, the homeland security department said. “Today, US Border Patrol was conducting immigration enforcement operations near 26th Street and Kedzie Avenue in Chicago, Illinois, when an unknown male driving a black Jeep fired shots at agents and fled the scene,” the DHS said in a post on X.

Immigration raids across Chicago and the surrounding areas, including at a daycare centre this week have called for protests and violent arrests. A Reuters report stated that more than a dozen Chicago mothers were arrested outside of an immigration detention facility in Broadview on Friday.

The immigration crackdown by the Trump administration began in September in Chicago and the DHS said that it has resulted in arrests of more than 3,000 people. The arrests reportedly include US citizens, and those with no criminal history.
