According to a report by Check Point Research, January saw a 39% increase in new domains containing “Valentine” or “love”, compared to the previous month, and a 17% increase year-over-year.Worryingly, 1 in 8 of these domains were deemed malicious or risky, designed to prey on unsuspecting individuals seeking romantic connections online.
Furthermore, organisations are not immune either as the report highlights that theyfaced a 34% increase in attempts to access these perilous websites compared to the previous month, and a staggering 175% increase from January 2023. This trend showcases the escalating cyberattacks surrounding major events like Valentine’s Day.
Phishing attacks, already the most common form of online trickery, are getting smarter. Scammers are now leveraging AI tools like ChatGPT to create fake websites and chatbots that mimic legitimate businesses or even potential romantic partners. These scams aim to lure victims into clicking malicious links or divulging sensitive information.
The report also warns users to be extra cautious of emails and messages offering special deals or promoting romantic connections. These tactics are often used to lure victims to fraudulent websites like the one mentioned, “meioside.xyz,” which was recently flagged as malicious.
