In a special podcast on UnPolitics with India Today’s Preeti Choudhry, Assam Congress President and party Member of Parliament from Jorhat, Gaurav Gogoi, discussed the upcoming state elections and the opposition’s six-party alliance. In a startling development, he levelled serious allegations against Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and some of the top BJP leaders in the state, saying they have alleged links with those arrested in the Zubeen Garg murder case. He said that the social media are full of Sarma’s pictures with them.
Gogoi also criticised the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government, stating, “People want to live as citizens, not as slaves.” He accused Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sharma of corruption and claimed that the administration is targeting opposition candidates. Gogoi expressed confidence in the Congress-led rainbow coalition, asserting that the alliance provides a strong alternative for the state. He also questioned the impartiality of the Election Commission during the delimitation process, claiming that it is no longer a neutral umpire. Furthermore, Gogoi highlighted the party’s promises, which include universal direct cash transfers independent of political affiliation, land rights for citizens, and enhanced security measures for women, such as establishing all-women police stations in every subdivision. He also reiterated his party’s support for the Women’s Reservation Bill, emphasising the need for progressive political steps in Assam.
