Vinai Kumar Saxena, the erstwhile Lieutenant Governor of Delhi, is all set to take over as Ladakh’s next Lt Governor. His appointment came after Kavinder Gupta, the former Lt Governor of Ladakh, submitted his resignation on Thursday and was appointed as the next Governor of Himachal Pradesh.
On Thursday, several Indian states witnessed a change in the names of their Governors as part of a major reshuffling process. States including West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, and several others saw the appointment of new Governors as many of the previous ones either resigned or transferred to a different state. In West Bengal, former Governor CV Ananda Bose resigned, and in his place, the erstwhile Tamil Nadu Governor was appointed.
During his time as Delhi’s Lieutenant Governor, Saxena often grabbed news headlines for his tussle with the Aam Aadmi Party. In December last year, Saxena wrote a letter to AAP’s National Convenor, Arvind Kejriwal, accusing him of “gross indifference” and “criminal inaction” on air pollution, holding his government responsible for the crisis. Responding to the letter, the AAP said the move was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from the present Delhi government led by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta.
The party’s Delhi Chief Whip, Sanjeev Jha, wrote a three-page rebuttal to the LG, alleging that Saxena was engaging in politics despite holding a constitutional post. “A constitutional office like the Lieutenant Governor is not meant for politics or publicity. If one wants to do politics, one should step down from the post—because Delhi needs accountability and impartial administration, not statements,” Jha said.
