A female police officer posted at the traffic police station in Bihar’s Darbhanga was fined on Wednesday for riding a two-wheeler without wearing a helmet during a vehicle-checking drive.

The checking was being conducted by the traffic police, with Traffic Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Prakash Kumar present on the route.

As the officer reached the checkpoint, she was stopped by the traffic police and issued a challan for violating traffic rules by riding without a helmet, after which she was given a helmet free of cost and advised to wear it while riding in future.

The DSP also warned her that a higher fine would be imposed if she was found violating the rule again.

The incident took place during a road safety awareness campaign organised by a private institution, which was distributing helmets to two-wheeler riders found without one.

Traffic police personnel were deployed at Karpuri Chowk in Darbhanga to assist with the vehicle-checking drive.

During the drive, riders without helmets were stopped, fined and then provided helmets by the organisation.

“Due to frequent road accidents, a vehicle-checking drive was conducted at Karpuri Chowk, where riders without helmets were fined first and then provided free helmets by the organisation,” said Prakash Kumar, DSP Traffic, Darbhanga.

The female police officer, who was in uniform and riding a two-wheeler with a police-coloured number plate, was identified by personnel on duty. Despite this, DSP Prakash Kumar questioned her and issued a challan without making any exception.

Kumar added that even police vehicles are fined for violations and stressed that the law is the same for everyone. Anyone found violating traffic rules, regardless of position or rank, will be challaned.
