Who Is Tommaso Cioni's Friend, Walter Goncalves? Is He The Masked Kidnapper Of Nancy Guthrie?

Today Show host, Savannah Guthrie’s mother, Nancy Guthrie, has been missing from her Tucson, Arizona home since she was last seen at midnight on January 31, 2026 (ET). The 84-year-old Nancy was kidnapped, and they were investigating the case with priority. The abductor sent ransom notes demanding USD 6 million in bitcoin, which Savannah Guthrie agreed to pay. Recently, on February 10, 2026 (ET), the FBI released glimpses of a masked kidnapper. The public suspects Nancy’s son-in-law, Tommaso, and his friend, Walter Goncalves, as the potential face behind the mask.

Pics and video of a person of interest in Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping case go viral

The FBI released high-resolution surveillance photos and video clips of a person of interest in the kidnapping of Savannah’s mom, Nancy Guthrie. The footage was recovered from residual data in her home’s backend systems after the recording device was removed. The clip shows an armed individual outside her Tucson residence on the morning she vanished. Key details from the visual evidence reportedly include the subject wearing a full-face ski mask (balaclava), dark gloves, a zip-up jacket, khakis, sneakers, and a backpack with reflective strips on the straps.

The man in the video is visibly armed, appearing to have a handgun and a flashlight in their mouth to keep their hands free. Investigative experts noted that the person has visible eyes and eyebrows through the mask and may have dark facial hair or a moustache. The individual was seen approaching Nancy Guthrie’s front door, staring into the doorbell camera, and then covering it with plants he pulled from the victim’s garden. As the footage surfaced, speculations about the kidnapper’s identity started making rounds, including Tommaso Cioni and Walter Goncalves.

Who is Walter Goncalves, and why is he suspected of being Nancy Guthrie’s masked kidnapper?

Walter Goncalves is a guitarist and vocalist and one of the three founding members of the Tucson-based post-punk band, Early Black. He founded the band in April 2007 alongside drummer, Dominic Evans and bassist/vocalist, Tommaso Cioni, who is also the husband of Annie Guthrie, the daughter of Nancy Guthrie. Walter’s name has recently come into public focus in February 2026 due to his connection to Tommaso Cioni, and currently, both of them are facing intense online scrutiny as the public thinks one or both of them are involved in Nancy’s abduction.

Some X (formerly Twitter) users suspect Walter Goncalves to be the masked man whom FBI consider a person of interest in Nancy Guthrie’s kidnapping. An online user shared an image of Walter and Tommaso and wrote, “What about Walter Goncalves? Same facial features as man in mask?” The post sparked a debate among X users, with one stating, “Walter may be guy with backpack & gun…definitely looks like his very dark eyes, p lip but only if he has mustache & beard. Tomasso fits more of second guy with he are two guys as one pair of shoes have some sort of stripe.” Notably, the photo shared showed Walter clean-shaven.

Another person echoed similar sentiments, saying, “Eyebrows are different but he could’ve manscaped before the abduction.” Many had contrasting views, refuting the possibility of Walter Goncalves being Nancy’s kidnapper, claiming the masked man “Looks like tomassos build.” According to them, the beard and overall physique of the person of interest match more with Annie Guthrie’s husband than Walter. Amid the discussion, some showcased sensibility by asking others to stop speculating and defaming individuals without solid proof. An X user commented, “How about you let the experts do their job and stop trying to get internet fame – what if you are wrong? Do you have a lawyer?”

How did Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni, first get linked to Nancy Guthrie’s disappearance?

NewsNation journalist, Ashleigh Banfield claimed on her podcast that Tommaso Cioni was a “prime suspect,” citing an unverified law enforcement source. Annie Guthrie and her husband, Tommaso Cioni, are under intense scrutiny as they were among the last people to see Nancy Guthrie before she disappeared from her Tucson home on January 31, 2026. Tommaso reportedly drove Nancy home after a family dinner on Saturday night, ET, and confirmed she was safely inside at approximately 9:30 p.m. Notably, both the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Department have stated that there are currently no named suspects in the Nancy Guthrie case.
