Calling the municipal election results a sign of a shifting public mood, BRS working president KT Rama Rao said the party had once again proved it remains the principal opposition in Telangana.
“I wholeheartedly thank each one of our brothers and sisters who stood by the party and supported us,” KTR said while reacting to the results.
He alleged that the ruling Congress used every possible tactic — persuasion, money, division, intimidation, but said they “clearly failed to win the hearts of the people.”
KTR noted that panchayat and municipal elections usually favour the party in power, especially when it still has two to three years left in office. “These are not elections for a change of government. This thinking is visible across the country,” he said.
However, he argued that Telangana has shown a different trend. Referring to the recent panchayat elections, he said nearly 40% of gram panchayats were won by BRS. “In more than 4,000 villages, our sarpanches won,” he said.
“Looking at today’s municipal results, we have achieved even better results, silencing those who spoke against us,” he added.
According to KTR, out of 124 places where elections were held, 30 resulted in hung situations and BRS directly won 15 municipalities. In another 10 to 15 municipalities where the party emerged as the single largest, it has the opportunity to form councils.
He compared the results with the 2020 municipal elections when TRS had won 122 out of 130 mayor and chairperson posts. The Congress won four, the BJP won two, and AIMIM won two.
Alleging large-scale misuse of official machinery, KTR said money power and liquor distribution were used extensively. “Despite this, voters came out fearlessly and cast their votes. We thank them,” he said.
He also accused Congress of attempting “bargaining, horse-trading, poaching and sending police to threaten our winning candidates.” Despite this, he said, “we are ready to fight.”
On alliances, KTR said BRS joined hands with CPI in certain areas to counter what he described as Congress and BJP working together. He referred to exposing a 6,000 crore coal scam in Singareni and said CPI supported BRS in Chennur and Kothagudem, where the party won.
“These elections in villages and towns have once again proven that BRS alone is the main alternative and principal opposition capable of fighting Congress in the state and stopping BJP,” he said.
KTR said BRS would move forward with the same momentum in the upcoming GHMC, Warangal, Khammam corporations and Zilla Parishad elections.
In a direct challenge to Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, he said, “If you truly have confidence in your government, make the MLAs who switched parties resign and face elections. Let by-elections in ten places decide the real public mood.”
He concluded by saying no political leader is permanent. “Many people in politics think they are permanent rulers. But no one is permanent,” he said, adding that even leaders like Indira Gandhi, NT Rama Rao and KCR had faced defeat.
According to KTR, the results show that public dissatisfaction is growing and that BRS has succeeded in establishing itself as the state’s principal opposition.
