A team of officers from the Labour and Road Transport Departments intercepted an autorickshaw, also called ‘tum tum’ in the local language, and rescued children being taken for field labour near Mudnal Cross at the outskirts of Yadgir city on Tuesday.

As many as 10 minors have been rescued and sent home, advising them to go to school.

Officers also advised the parents and driver of the autorickshaw to not engage children in field work but encourage them to go to school.

“Engaging them (children) in field work amounts to a violation of existing law that legally prevents such labouring, and we explained to them the Childhood and Adolescent Labour (Prohibition and Control) Act 1986,” said Riyaz Patel Varkanalli, Planning Director of Child Labour.

Labour Inspector Sangeetha Honnur said that the parents must not engage their children in field labour and should encourage them to pursue higher studies and help them shape a bright future.

She said that street dramas and awareness camps will be organised in the rural areas to create awareness among villagers.

Road Transport Officers booked a case against the driver of the vehicle. RTO inspector Prabhakhar and others were present.
