Sara Lee owner Bimbo Bakeries USA is relocating its headquarters to the Dallas area from Horsham, Pennsylvania, as the bakery giant looks to better position itself for growth.
Dallas is already a significant market for Bimbo, which owns bakeries, sales centers and distribution facilities across the area, the company said. Bimbo currently employs 20,000 workers in the U.S., and no job cuts are expected as part of the move, according to a spokesperson.
The new location in the Dallas suburb of Irving, Texas, provides Bimbo with a more centralized location in the U.S. and puts the business closer to Grupo Bimbo’s global corporate office in Mexico City.
“Relocating our headquarters to Dallas positions us to operate more efficiently as we continue to invest in our brands and our communities,” Greg Koehrsen, president of Bimbo USA, said in a statement.
The Lone Star state has long played an important role in the company’s history, starting in 1998 when Grupo Bimbo entered the U.S. market with the purchase of Texas-based Mrs. Baird’s Bakery. The company’s U.S. portfolio now includes Ball Park buns, Entenmann’s pastries and Thomas’ English muffins.
While the decision by a food company to move its headquarters is rare, it does happen from time to time. Nestlé USA relocated from California to Northern Virginia nearly a decade ago due to the area’s proximity to lawmakers, regulators and lobbyists. And in 2015, Slim Jim manufacturer Conagra Brands announced it was moving its headquarters from Omaha, Nebraska, to Chicago in order to better attract talent.
